Patrick Arenz is a trial lawyer who litigates and tries high-stakes cases, including cases involving patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and other commercial disputes. Mr. Arenz’s clients are as diverse as his practice, ranging from small inventor-led companies to Fortune 100 companies. The common link between all of these clients is the need for vigorous, focused, and strategic trial counsel in cases that matter most. For instance, with respect to patent enforcement, Mr. Arenz has helped three separate inventor-led clients each achieve licensing revenue well in excess of eight figures. Mr. Arenz has also litigated cases on both sides of the “v” in significant competitor-versus-competitor patent disputes. He is currently representing a LLC against a Fortune 500 company for breach of contract and misappropriation of trade secrets in federal court.

Mr. Arenz is able to maintain such a diverse practice because of his focus on preparing to win each case at trial. He was trial counsel in various courtrooms across the country, including federal district courts in the Eastern District of Texas, the Northern District of California, and the District of Minnesota. By virtue of this trial experience, along with his intimate understanding of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Evidence, Mr. Arenz hones in on the most important issues and disputes during fact and expert discovery, which ultimately leads to the best result regardless of whether the case goes to verdict or not.

One important part of Mr. Arenz’s practice is his dedication to ensure that everyone in our society has access to justice. Over the course of his career, he has tried various cases on a pro bono basis, including jury and bench trials on matters such as felony criminal defense, a contested claim for political asylum, and most recently the defense of a mother in a Hague Convention case that was tried in United States District Court. He now chairs the firm’s Pro Bono Committee, and seeks to continue the firm’s longstanding commitment to rewrite the odds for those who otherwise cannot afford representation. Since 2008, for instance, the firm has contributed over 7% of our total attorney billable time to pro bono work.

Mr. Arenz is active within his community and professional organizations. Mr. Arenz has been involved with the Sedona Conference since 2008, and currently serves on the Steering Committee for Working Group 9 and 10 on Patent Damages and Case Management in Patent Litigation. Mr. Arenz is also a board member for the Minnesota Chapter of the Federal Bar Association; Compatible Technology International, which is a nonprofit organization that designs and distributes innovative tools in collaboration with small farmers and their communities to improve food and water security in developing countries; and, Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid, which advocates for the legal rights of disadvantaged people to have safe, healthy, and independent lives in strong communities.
